Ecotherapy, also known as nature therapy or green therapy, is a form of therapeutic practice that harnesses the healing and beneficial effects of nature on mental and emotional well-being. It involves engaging in activities outdoors, connecting with nature, and utilising the natural environment as a means to promote psychological health.
The principles of ecotherapy are based on the belief that spending time in nature, such as forests, parks, gardens, or natural landscapes, can have positive effects on reducing stress, anxiety, and depression. This practice can involve various activities like gardening, hiking, wilderness expeditions, animal-assisted therapy, or simply spending time in natural settings. In my practice, I use parks and green spaces in the city as Mother Nature’s therapy room.
Ecotherapy offers several benefits for mental and emotional well-being:
Stress Reduction: Spending time in nature has been shown to reduce cortisol levels, the hormone associated with stress, leading to feelings of relaxation and calmness.
